I finally did it!
Thank God. I completely got the lighting figured out for each shot to give us the best looking footage possible with the budget and equipment available to us. Here's what I'm doing to get the lighting effects for Midnight Roadkill...
CAMERA (Canon HV30) This little HD camera costs under $1000 and has a cult following...now I know why. It's a great little HD camera if you don't have any serious money.OK, so here's our settings...
-White balance on regular ungeled light to get a nice but subtle blue tinge to our geled and fluorescent lights. (You can barely tell it's blue. It's just a hint of really light blue which is perfect!)
-Use the cine mode and shoot in 24p while making sure the shutter speed stays at 1/48. (In low light it can sometimes go to 1/24 but there's a trick to keep it at 1/48)
LIGHTS Performance Car Part Deals
Car interior shots:
Two 6" fluorescent tubes with 4100k bulbs.
Overhead car interior light geled with CTB 1/2.
Aluminum foil reflector board.
(This gives a very believable lighting set up and it looks good while helping to distinguish the actors from the background a bit)
Exterior shots:
-Keep car interior lighting set up on
-Use car headlights geled wih CTB1/2 on high beams
-Use second set of car headlights geled same way on high beams
-For wider exterior shots use 3 sets of car headlights geled
(This provides are very believable nighttime feel to the whole set and gives us enough light to work with on those wider shots helping to keep the image clean)
-There are several scenes where Jerry is using a flashlight so we have a 65 lumen geled with CTB 1/2. This also helps to add light.
-There is also an establishing shot with the headlights pointing at the camera so here I'm going to use double CTB gels.
-There is a few other details as well but I really can't think of how to explain them right now.
This .... took me two months to figure out. I believe that when doing a movie lighting is the biggest challenge because basically making movies is painting with light. Posted by Owen Mulligan
